Travellers have now left a playing field at Westminster Park playing field after Cheshire West and Chester Council obtained an eviction order in court.

About 20 caravans set up camp in the field at the park on Sunday afternoon (July 3).

CWaC issued a legal notice on Monday (July 4) directing the travellers to leave by 1pm the following day but they stayed put.

An eviction order was then obtained at Chester Magistrates Court today (Thursday, July 7) which was served at 11.30am.

Police were present to prevent a breach of the peace during the eviction

At just after 4pm the travellers began to move off the site in an operation supervised by police, including a specialist officer with the Traveller Team.

There was no trouble.

Unlike neighbouring authority Halton Council, CWaC does not have a transit site to which the travellers could be directed and it is not known where members of the group were heading next. It is understood there are early stage plans to create a transit site but the located has not been determined.

There are believed to have been complaints from residents relating to minor allegations of anti-social behaviour involving youngsters from the encampment but nothing serious.

Some rubbish had been left behind and an abandoned car was also recovered although it is not known for certain whether the vehicle was connected with the camp.

The travellers told The Chronicle they had come over from Ireland for two weddings and claimed two women in the group were pregnant.
