COUNCIL chiefs are considering tenders from companies who think they can sort out Northwich's traffic problems.

Cheshire County Council has invited bidders to provide a successful transport strategy for the Northwich Vision.

It is expected to appoint the winning group in the New Year, which will then work alongside the Northwich Vision board.

Traffic in and out of the town centre often comes to a standstill, not only during rush hour but at peak shopping times, and Vision chiefs want to ensure the extra people pulled into Northwich attracted by its new shops and leisure facilities do not get caught up in jams.

Andy Wallace of the North-wich Vision said: 'We are hoping there will be more trips into the town.

'The purpose of the North-wich Vision is that the duration of people's stay in the town centre will be longer. We don't just want people to pop in and pick up one or two things, we want them to come for three or four hours, do some shopping, make use of the leisure facilities and generally have a good experience.

'That's the goal, but by increasing what we have to offer, there's going to be an increase in traffic and that is what the transport scheme will have to address.

'The company will have to come to the Northwich Vision board to present their findings and we will be working very closely to ensure that all the various options are thor-oughly examined.'

A county council spokeswoman said: 'We are considering a number of tenders which concentrate on the transport strategy once the Northwich Vision is complete.

'These are being considered at the moment and we hope to appoint in the New Year.'
