Merseyrail services between Ellesmere Port and Hooton have been suspended due to a derailed freight train.
A rail replacement bus service is in operation between the two stations.
Merseyrail originally expected disruption until 12pm, but now it is expected until 5pm.
A spokesperson for Merseyrail said: "Due to an earlier operating incident between Ellesmere Port and Overpool some Ellesmere Port lines are blocked.
"All stations between Ellesmere Port and Hooton will not be served."
