THIRTY traders attended the re-launch of the Stamp Crime Out Of Town (SCOOT) workshops which aims to curb crime in Crewe town centre.

They were told about the progress of the scheme and given advice from Trading Standards officer Nicki Rose.

The initiative has resulted from a partnership of Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's town centre management team, Cheshire Constabulary's community safety department, retailers and members of the community.

Benefits of membership include shops sharing information on people involved in retail crime and joint action on banning notices.

Town centre manager Elaine Dodd said: 'Collectively, the information provided is a powerful tool in crime prevention.

'Stores not in the scheme will ultimately lose out, particularly considering the effects of banning orders preventing entry into SCOOT members stores.'

PC Bob Gregg, from Crewe Police, added: 'The networking and collaboration of shops ensures the scheme success.

'Already the Radio Link membership has increased by 56%, all adding to the security of the town centre, and is used in conjunction with CCTV.'

Four more workshops are planned for this year.

Cllr Maurice Jones, the borough council's portfolio holder for public protection, said: 'I am delighted to see the return of the workshops following their popularity last year. Crewe and Nantwich agencies are again showing the lead in their initiative to reduce crime and the fear of crime in the area.

'The work involved will contribute towards a borough application for the Safer Shopping Award.'

Traders interested in SCOOT membership are invited to phone 07971 813157.
