A SECTION of towpath in Chester has had to be closed for the foreseeable future after a retaining wall from a private garden collapsed on to the route.

Cheshire West and Chester Council says the tow path is closed from Northgate bridge to Northgate locks although pedestrian access over the locks is still open.

Council spokeswoman Laura Johnson said it was not known how long the tow path would be closed off but it is likely to be for the foreseeable future.

There is speculation the collapse could have been caused by the wet weather.
