A STAR was born at South Cheshire's biggest talent competition on Saturday.
Singer Tony Jones, 17, of Oak Tree Close, Crewe, won the annual Star Quest event with his energetic and spectacular performance of Stand By Me.
Delighted with his victory, he said: 'I really gave it my all this year. I've taken part three times before and never won so I just went for it. It's just amazing.'
Held in the Market Square at Crewe, the contest attracted a crowd of more than 400 as 40 acts took to the stage between 10am and 3pm.
Inthe brightsunshinetheywere treated to a variety of performances including cheerleading dance troupe the Matrix Minxes and outstanding young singer Jasmine Dean, 14, who sang Colour of the Wind.
Town centre manager Elaine Dodd said: 'It was a brilliant day and the quality of the acts was amazing. The crowds were thrilled and it was a great advert for the town.'
'Star Quest is part of the council's plan to provide entertainment every Saturday afternoon on both the Nantwich and Crewe town squares.'
The event was covered by Signal One's outside broadcast unit with listeners across Staffordshire and Cheshire also treated to the sounds of eventual runners-up, singer-guitarist Nicola Whittle, 24, of Middlewich Road, Crewe, who gave a rousing rendition of Coldplay's Fix You, and 28-year-old Michael Bradley, of Monarch Close, Crewe who performed Billy Joel's Piano Man.
Winner Tony was presented with a £100 cash prize as well as a gold disk from Signal One, while Nicola and Michael were presented with £20 and a certificate by Cllr John Hammond.
