A Tiverton woman celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her friends and family.

Mary Day, nee Brereton, was born in Manchester on November 21, 1913, when King George V was on the throne and just one year after the Titanic sank.

After losing her father to tuberculosis as a girl, Mary was sent to Cheadle Hulme School, which was originally established for ‘fatherless children’.

Mary became a machinist in a clothing factory after leaving school and trained at night school to become a self-employed tailoress. After World War II, Mary married and had one child, Francis, and moved to Tiverton in 2005.

Her milestone birthday was celebrated with a telegram from the Queen and parties at Tarporley Hospital’s Day Centre and The Opal Club with friends and neighbours.
