CREWE depot bus driver Gordon Holmes, pictured, of Balterley, has been selected to represent the First company in the national Bus Driver of the Year competition.

The competition, this year celebrating its 40th anniversary, will be held in Blackpool over the weekend of September 9 and 10.

To qualify for the competition drivers have to have an excellent driving record, with no 'at fault' incidents recorded in the previous 24 months. They then have to successfully complete a Highway Code knowledge test and an 'on duty' covert driving assessment conducted by a driver trainer.

Gordon said: 'I'm really looking forward to the September competition in Blackpool. I know it will be a tough test of my skills as I will be up against the best drivers from bus companies across the UK, but I will be doing my best to bring the top prize home.'

Paul De Santis, commercial director for First's bus services in North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, said: 'All our drivers take great pride in their professional driving skills, so to win a nomination and to go on to represent the company in the national competition is a landmark achievement.'
