THE future of a village hall which has been used by the community for more than a century is set to be decided during the next few weeks.
The trustees of Barnton Memorial Hall, left to the people of the village 105 years ago by Sir John Brunner, have decided to erect a new building following the news that a clinic based in the hall is relocating.
The project team in charge of the move is hoping to build a memorial hall at Barnton Football Club in Townfield Lane.
The 107-year-old building, which is currently used by the village, would be leased to provide funding to make the move.
It is not clear whether the existing hall would be knocked down, but it would be an option if the building was sold.
A refurbishment of the hall was also considered but the cost would be the same as providing a new building, which the trustees felt would be of more benefit to the community.
Barbara Leicester, chairwoman of Barnton Football Club, says it would be a great move for the club.
She said: 'We have got a real opportunity to improve the facilities at Barnton Football Club by relocating the hall here.'
The project team has applied for outline planning permission for the building and is hoping to put the existing site up for sale in the next few weeks.
Memorial hall trustee John Turn-bull, who is the project manager, said: 'It is a very ambitious and exciting project, which I am sure will be to the benefit of everyone.' A public meeting will be held once the project team has a clear idea of the costs and time scales of the scheme.
The war memorial will be part of the move and suggestions are being considered by the project team over its future. One proposal is to move it to the new site, along with the village hall.
Barnton Parish Council chairman Maurice Ferguson added: 'The parish council fully supports this project and can see many long-term benefits.
'We hope that the new village hall can provide services to the village for many years to come.'
If anyone would like to discuss the building, a member of the project team is normally available at Barnton Memorial Hall on Tuesdays from 9.30-10.30am. Alternatively, write to the team c/o: The Secretary, 63 Grange Road, Barnton, Northwich CW8 4PE.
