A CHESTER theatre company is getting in tune to welcome the Olympic torch to the city.

Theatre in the Quarter artistic director Matt Baker is working with 200 singers, dancers and musicians to present a version of his original anthem Across the World at Chester Racecourse on Tuesday, May 29.

The anthem (which you can listen to below) tells the story of a Chester giant who, like an Olympic athlete in pursuit of gold, travels the world to find her dream.Choirs, Homegrown Dance Theatre, schoolchildren and the Chester Schools’ Concert Band help the young girl in her quest for fulfilment.

The anthem was first performed by 700 people and six giants at Chester Amphitheatre on March 3 as Chester’s contribution to Music Nation – a UK-wide celebration of music organised by the BBC and LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games).

Across the World was originally commissioned and led by the Chester choir A Handbag of Harmonies, managed and coordinated by Theatre in the Quarter and supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire Rural Touring Arts.

The children’s section of the anthem Be The Best That You Can Be has been adopted by Paralympian footballer Matt Dimbylow, of Sandiway, who hopes it will become an official Olympic anthem. .
