RECORDS were smashed at South Cheshire College in Crewe as hundreds of students came away smiling after scooping the A-level results they wanted.

Recognised as a top college nationally, its overall pass rate was 99.3%.

A total of 731 students sat A-levels with an outstanding 74% of them notching up A to C top grades.

Of the 29 subjects on offer, 26 recorded 100% pass rates.

There were also 236 grade A passes at AS level, delighting students after their first year at Dane Bank Avenue.

Among the students now going on to university are high-fliers Frankie Cooke and Emily Knight who each gained four grade As.

Frankie, 18, from Crewe, excelled at economics, English literature, history and general studies while getting an AS level A in politics.

The former St. Thomas More High School pupil was thrilled with her results and is off to study history at York University

Emily, 18, moved to South Cheshire from Reading two years ago just in time to start her A-levels. Now she is to study medicinal chemistry at University College London.

She said: 'Although it was tough at first I soon settled. I'm sure my grades wouldn't have been as good if I had stayed in Berkshire. The teaching at the college was first-class.'

Five students also gained straight As in four A-level subjects, while 11 students gained three grade As.

Jonathan Colclough gained four As and his grade in economics was one of the five highest in the country according to the AQA examining body.

The former St Thomas More High School pupil said: 'I'm really chuffed with my grades and to come in the top five in the country for economics makes it even better.'

Former Shavington High School pupil Tom Austin is now heading for Manchester University to study biology with business and management.

College principal, Dr David Collins praised all who tried their hand at A-level.

A-level quality manager Gary Robinson said: 'We recorded our best ever results. It was fantastic to see so many happy faces on the day.'
