A CENTURY of life in Runcorn was celebrated when a well-known former farmer received his telegram from the Queen.

George West, known to friends and family as Ted, reached his 100th birthday on Tuesday, marked by tributes from locals who have known him over the years.

Ted, originally from Chester, came to Runcorn as a boy to work as a woodsman on the Brookes estate in Norton Village. He later became a farmer, living on the estate's farmhouse with his late wife Mary.

During the war Ted worked as a fireman and the couple had one daughter, Doreen.

His milestone was marked on Tuesday with a party at Norton Lodge care home, where he lives, as well as a telegram from the Queen.

Congratulations have also come pouring in from members of the local religious community including St Mary's Church where Ted has worshipped for many years. He even received birthday wishes from the Bishop of Birkenhead on a visit to Daresbury Church last Sunday.
