Teammates of a Cheshire student killed in a road accident paid tribute at a football match in his memory.

George Heath, 20, from Tarvin, was a pedestrian when he was involved in a fatal collision with a lorry on the busy A49 at Tarporley shortly before 8am on Friday (March 4).

His funeral service takes place at 2.30pm on Wednesday, March 16, at St Andrew’s Church, Tarvin, followed by burial in the churchyard.

George, a journalism student at Staffordshire University who intended switching to a graphic design course, was goalkeeper for the university’s 4th team.

A match between his side and local rivals Keele University last Wednesday (March 9) saw teammates wearing homemade ‘RIP George’ shirts before kick-off and yellow armbands during the game in line with George’s goalkeeper top.

Red and white balloons were released into the sky just before kick off, to match the team's strip with one yellow balloon symbolic of George's yellow kit.

And a minute’s silence was then observed in front of George’s watching family and girlfriend Polly Gentle, who is also a student at Staffordshire University.

Staffordshire University won the game 5-0.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season, George was named man of the match in a victory which included saving a shot with his face.

George’s father Paul Heath told Staffs Live, the website run by the journalism students: “It’s been a fabulous day, the balloons were a perfect tribute.

“George will be looking down and he will have picked the weather conditions for the game too… he loved diving in the mud.”

His mum Gaynor added: “The whole day has been incredibly moving. It’s lovely to see so many people turn out, it’s comforting at a very difficult time.”

George also played five-a-side with his pals from back home at Goals Soccer Centre in Chester.

Sam Walsh, who organises the weekly football session, grew up with George and his brother Harry and wanted to help plan ‘George’s Memorial Fundraiser’ in aid of charity on Good Friday (March 25).
