A TEAM of swimmers, including Runcorn's Michaela Richard and Chris Carter, have completed a gruelling swim across the English Channel in just under 29 hours.

The event was the first two-way channel relay swim ever undertaken by the Warrington Dolphins Club and is a particularly impressive achievement because one of the swimmers was four months pregnant and another had never taken part in any sea or night races before.

However, two of the six swimmers were no strangers to Channel conditions. Chris, 58, swam the Channel solo in 1973 and Michaela, 41, did the same on August 25, 1997.

Michaela said: 'We were inspired to do this race to raise money for Cancer Research - my husband was told he had cancer five years ago and the other swimmers all agreed it would be a fitting cause.

'We've been gearing up for this since last August.

'The weather was much worse for this swim than it was 10 years ago - it was a good deal cooler, the water was a lot choppier and the wind took us off course.'
