TWO Halton teachers are in line for national teaching awards after pupils nominated them for top honours.

Tony Fretwell and Denise Payne from The Heath School in Runcorn will attend The Teaching Awards Ceremony for the North West of England on Tuesday, June 27, at The Imperial Hotel in Blackpool.

Mr Fretwell, a PE teacher, has been put forward for The Teaching Award for Outstanding New Teacher, sponsored by the Training and Development Agency for Schools. Mrs Payne, a learning mentor, has been nominated for The Teaching Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year.

Both members of staff were initially nominated by students. These nominations were endorsed by the schools and the candidates were shortlisted in their respective categories. They were then visited at school and the judges had the opportunity to discuss their nominations with other staff and students.

Should either be successful in winning their category, they will be invited to a national awards ceremony later in the year.

The teaching awards aim to 'shine a spotlight on the fantastic work that takes place every day in schools across the UK'.
