COUNCIL tax is to rise as Frod-sham Town Council has given the go-ahead for a police community support officer.

Councillors voted 6-5 in favour of the PCSO following a public meeting.

They have agreed to pay the £11,000 needed to fund the PCSO, the rest of the funding coming from the Government.

It will take at least six months before the PCSO will be pounding the streets of Frodsham as it takes considerable time to train them and get the funding through.

PC Phil Meredith, who is leaving this week to join the North-wich response team, said: 'It will take some time before the PCSO is in place.

'This is a long-term venture and is something Frodsham should benefit from.'

Chief constable Peter Fahy said: 'As new PCSOs are recruited and they become established in their neighbour-hood, they will become a trusted and respected pillar of the community and a catalyst for providing solutions at a local level for anti-social behaviour and other community issues that affect people's lives.'

The type of work PCSOs undertake in the community can include dealing with nuisance youths and confiscating alcohol from under-age drinkers.
