A man dressed in women's clothing who was seen brandishing an air pistol inside a Tarvin convenience store has been arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police were called to the store on Tarvin High Street at around 8.55am today (Sunday May 10) following reports that a lone man had entered the shop dressed in women's clothing armed with a weapon believed to be an air pistol.

He is said to have produced the weapon, taken goods from the store and left the scene on foot.

The weapon and a vehicle believed to have been used in the offence were recovered later.

A 27-year-old man from the Manchester area has been arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and is currently helping police with enquiries.

Cheshire police expressed thanks to the people of Tarvin, in particular the members of the public who assisted in detaining the man before officers arrived.
