LANKY England footballer Peter Crouch may have suffered disappointment in the World Cup on Saturday but he scored with the thousands of visitors to the famous Wrenbury Scarecrow Trail.

A version of the popular footballer joined more than 120 creations of all shapes and sizes around the route of the annual trail which reached its climax over the weekend.

Organiser Ian Wilkinson said: 'This year has been brilliant. Thousand of people have come to walk the trail and they haven't been disappointed. 'I'm always gobsmacked at the great ideas the local community come up with and this year it has been a wonderful success'.

The event culminated in a fair at Wrenbury Primary School on Saturday which raised more than £2,500 for the Friends of Wrenbury School Trust, which distributes funds to the school for improvements to the facilities and the learning environment.

Last year's event financed a public address system and the school hopes this year's fair will help it invest in improvements to its out-door play facilities.

The day attracted more than 2,000 visitors and a variety of cake, refreshment and craft stalls kept them busy and cool in the boiling heat. The entertainment in the arena was spectacularly provided by giant unicycle-riding fire club-juggling circus entertainer, Steve Chaos.

Steve also delighted the audience by holding a circus skills workshop for kids of all ages.

Local companies Muller Dairies UK, Chatwins Bakery and Primebake also helped the good cause by donating prizes to the raffle.

Added Mr Wilkinson: 'It really brings the local community together every year. Everyone in the village and the local businesses comes together to raise much needed funds for the school.'

The winners of the scarecrow competition were announced during the fair with the Davies family taking first place with I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, which featured Ant and Dec stuck in the jungle and required onlookers to look through a pair of binoculars at the display, which was hidden inside a hedge.

Hen Party by local company H J Lea Oakes and Winnie the Pooh & Piglet Catch a Hedge-alump by the Wallis family were second and third respectively.
