HALTON is one of cheapest places in England to enjoy a dip, it has been revealed.
At £2.20 per swim session, the borough's pools charge 50p less than the national average.
Fees in Runcorn and Widnes are dwarfed by neighbouring Warrington - £2.60 - and Liverpool - £3.00.
The most expensive area is Blackpool where regular swimmers have to dig deep to pay the £3.60 fee.
The figures were released by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy which aims to encourage the nation to swim more often in a bid to keep fit.
Chairwoman Sarah Bazin said: 'People are missing out on valuable exercise because they are being priced out of the water. It is appalling to see some people who want to adopt a healthier lifestyle pay much more than their counterparts in neighbouring areas.
'Swimming is an excellent all-round form of aerobic exercise and can play a vital role in helping the country fight the obesity epidemic, which is threatening public health.
'Local authorities need to do their bit in helping to improve the nation's health. If prices were more competitive across neighbouring regions, it might encourage more people to take the plunge. Public health must be seen as a top priority.'
