A Swedish man has written to The Chronicle to say that after Britain voted to leave the EU, he feels ‘stupid’ to have bought a car that was built in Cheshire.

Anders Persson, who lives in Kristianstad in Sweden, even said he would like someone in Britain to buy back the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer, built in Ellesmere Port.

In the letter which was sent today (Thursday, June 30), Mr Persson explained he bought the Astra about a year ago, adding: “I have been very happy with the car. That is until now.”

Both he and his local Vauxhall/Opel dealership in southern Sweden were originally unaware of where the car had been produced, believing it had been built in Russelsheim.

“No it is not. It was produced in the UK or Ellesmere Port, Cheshire West to be more precise,” he wrote.

“Now I just feel stupid having bought a car made by people who have turned their back on Europe and apparently wish to live in splendid isolation. It does absolutely not feel great getting into a car day by day knowing that the people that literally put it together disapprove of foreigners in general and Europeans in particular.

“In this country there is a saying: Do not bite the hand that feeds you. The EU is far from perfect, obviously, but at least Sweden is in it.

“Best of luck with your life in splendid isolation.”

Ironically, despite the criticism from Mr Persson, car giant Vauxhall had actually urged its workers to vote to remain in the EU.

Since last week’s referendum decision, owner General Motors has not ruled out closing the plant and previously said Vauxhall was part of a ‘fully integrated European company’ which benefited from the EU.

The manufacturer employs more than 2,000 staff at their factory in Ellesmere Port.
