COMEDIAN Peter Kay took the road to Crewe instead of Amarillo when he paid a surprise visit to the Limelight club.

The laugh-a-minute star, who had a number one hit with the Tony Christie classic, came along to sample some of South Cheshire's homegrown comedy talent on Wednesday night.

The 32-year-old Bolton-born star of hit shows Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere was in Crewe to watch pal Jason Manford who was taking part in Ribbed Comedy's last Edinburgh Nights Show.

Ribbed organiser Wayne Williams said: 'Jason Manford is a Ribbed regular and has performed at the Limelight several times. Peter had some food in the Limelight Music Café before taking his seat in the audience to watch the show. 'I spoke to him before the show and he came across really well.

'People were a bit shocked but he was really nice. He signed a few autographs and had his picture taken with a few people in the audience.'
