STUDENTS in Crewe are getting the best deal in the country when it comes to renting houses.

According to research, property rental in Crewe is the cheapest in the country.

Based on prices for 14,000 properties in 54 university locations, the average rent students can be expected to pay is £52.44 a week.

But price savvy Crewe students, mainly from Manchester Metropolitan University, pay only a fraction of the national price at £33 a week.

Researchers believe that Crewe's position as the cheapest place to live is buoyed by being a comparatively small university town in the north.

William Berry, co-founder and director of website www.accommodationforstudents.com, which carried out the research, believes Crewe could see an increase in the number of students opting to study in the town if rental prices stay low.

William, himself a graduate of MMU, said: 'With the Government's policy change in regard to tuition fees becoming a major factor in the cost of being a full-time student, the price of accommodation will be a major cost consideration in a student's selection of which university to attend.'

Research also showed that London, Cambridge, Oxford and Glasgow had the most expensive rates.

The website, at its peak, attracts more than 40,000 student visitors a week. Accommodation for Students monitors student rents on an ongoing basis and this research supplements an earlier survey last year.
