Controversial plans have  been lodged for more than 400  student rooms in a neighbourhood where traditional residents  feel their area has already been altered due to ‘studentification’.

Miller Developments has applied for  permission for 408 studio rooms in  three blocks – a five-storey block of 240  rooms, a five-storey block of 111 rooms  and a three-storey block of 57 rooms –  on land next to Telford's Warehouse in  Tower Wharf.

Labour ward councillor Bob Rudd  supports managed complexes such as  this one but has already said it is ‘a  step too far’ in an area close to the  University of Chester, where 60% of  the population is made up of students.

He noted only 50 parking spaces were  included in the plans and fears the  impact on existing residents if more  cars are competing for on-street parking.

Objector Lauren Sherrington wrote:  “It will not improve the area by any  means, this will cause noise and disruption for many families who live in  the area.”

Fellow objector Olivia Guinan said:  “Not all students behave badly but I  moved to this new development along  the canal to have peace and quiet not  have to endure noise, mess and disruptive nights of parties during work  weeks.”

In its student management plan,  Miller says that prior to taking up  residence in university-owned/managed accommodation, students are issued contracts containing a number of  stipulations relating to student conduct.

It adds: “University of Chester students, whether residing in university-owned accommodation or elsewhere, are encouraged to become considerate members of their community  with an established sense of social  responsibility.”
