CHESTER City Council has officially opened a new base for its city centre street cleansers.

The new accommodation is part of the council’s commitment to its city centre clean-up campaign, which is targeting issues such as litter, graffiti and trade waste.

The facilities at 49 Northgate Street provide a staff room, shower, toilet, kitchen area and office space for the street cleansing team.

Councillor Jill Houlbrook, chairman of the Environment Scrutiny Committee, said: “Our street cleansing team is integral to improving the local environment and it is about time they had access to decent facilities.

“They work extremely hard from 5.30am every day and this new base will hopefully make the challenge of cleaning the city centre a little easier for them.”

The council is investing an extra £8,000 toward improvements involving street cleansers, police community support officers, the fire service, community safety wardens and CCTV operators.
