THE refurbishment of a prominent city centre shop close to the city walls and the Eastgate clock has been welcomed.
The scheme has been carried out at 1-3 Foregate Street by Clarks International.
Chester Civic Trust said it welcomed the new use of the shop, set in the city conservation area. The trust suggested, however, the front entrance be moved to its original position, and objected to materials and signing.
These were said to be 'distinctly unsympathetic' although the trust was pleased to see the reuse of the city wall frontage of the shop.
Commenting on the retrospective application, planning officer Johndaniel Jacques said he did not believe it would be reasonable for the council to require the repositioning of the entrance as this would need a completely new shop front.
Mr Jacques recommended the application should be approved and the city's planning board agreed the refurbishment should have permission.
