A TEENAGER was arrested after a car was found in a canal at Middlewich.

Police and six fire crews were called to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Booth Lane early on Thursday morning, where a stolen Nissan 200 SX sports car had crashed through a road sign and submerged in the canal.

Following reports that people may have been trapped inside the vehicle, fire crews from Winsford, Middlewich and Holmes Chapel were joined at the scene by line rescue and hydraulic platform appliances from Knuts-ford, Macclesfield and Chester at around 2.25am.

A Cheshire fire spokesman said: 'We sent the more detailed appliances, as we were afraid people may have had to be rescued from the car.

'However, we soon found that no one was trapped, so we removed the car from the canal and at 4.20am left the incident to the police.'

Six officers from Middlewich police's targeted patrol team investigated the incident, and hours later arrested an 18-year-old local man away from the scene.

He has been released on police bail until November 20, pending further investigation.
