A HALTON rugby star has been awarded a prestigious scholarship by Leeds Metropolitan University.

Joanne Watmore, from Weston Village, has been called up to the England Elite rugby union squad and has captained the England students' team.

Joanne, 20, will receive technical advice to develop her skills, along with financial support to the tune of £1,000, as she works towards a degree in accountancy and finance.

She said: 'The scholarship will enable me to gain the support and guidance I need in order to develop in my sport as well as organise my study with the help of my mentor.'

Head of sport at Leeds Met, Malcolm Brown, said: 'Many previous scholars have progressed to full international honours and I am sure the class of 2006/07 will do the same.'
