COUNTY councillors have written to Education Secretary Ed Balls claiming plans to split Cheshire will put education and child care services at risk.

Children’s services executive members David Rowlands and Shirley Harris have sent an open letter – copied to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Cllr Rowlands said: “The Children Act places a duty on us to act in the best interests of the children of Cheshire. Those interests are not being fulfilled by the decision to split the county.”

He and Cllr Harris question the decision to merge the role of director of children’s services with director of adult services.

“Dedicated directors for children’s services have led our high performance. This workload is unsustainable,” they claim.

Cllrs Rowlands and Harris want concerned members of the public to write to the minister and MPs and sign-up to a petition on the Downing Street website.
