A CHEEKY monkey at Chester Zoo sparked an alert after deciding to take a nap outside his enclosure on Thursday morning.
The small spider monkey called Popoyan managed to jump over a barrier on the monkey island at around 11.30am and curl up for a snooze.
Keepers immediately spotted the 11 year-old naughty ape and raised the alarm.
The zoo was immediately put on amber alert as keepers grabbed their nets to try and capture the escapee.
Spokesperson from Chester Zoo Rachel Ashton said: “It was all over in a matter minutes. The keepers managed to net the monkey and put him back on the correct side of the barrier.
“It turns out some of the trees in the enclosure have suddenly had a growth spurt and he has managed to climb one of the trees to get out.
“Tonight when the monkeys are back in side the keepers will trim back the trees to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
