HIGHWAYS chiefs are proposing traffic-calming to put the brakes on reckless drivers who plague a village centre.

They plan to install 14 sets of speed humps and six speed tables to slow motorists down along Primrose Avenue in Haslington.

Questionnaires have gone out to hundreds of homes seeking views on the proposals.

Cheshire County Council senior engineer Alan Taylor said: 'The scheme would reduce the risk of accidents,

control traffic speeds and reduce short-cutting through the area.

'If no physical traffic-calming were to be used, then the only alternative would be enhanced slow markings and possible other carriagewaymarking features.'

Engineers have ruled out the introduction of speed cameras and chicanes.

He added: 'Under Government guidelines, it is not possible to use speed cameras in this location as there is no history of fatal and serious accident. Due to the location of driveways, chicanes are not practical.'

A Primrose Avenue resident, who asked not to be named, said: 'Some drivers use the road like a racetrack which is so dangerous through a residential area like ours.'

Cheshire highways officials say they have more traffic-calming schemes in mind for Haslington and Winterley which will be the subject of village-wide consultation schemes. nFor more information, contact Alan Taylor or Abdul Mahabis on 01244 603777.
