EXTRA mobile speed cameras are being introduced in Halton as part of the latest Government crackdown.

Three collision hot spots have been singled out for speed camera use and, over the next 12 months, an extra 15 camera sites will be added to roads with a history of collisions involving death or serious injury.

The Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership currently manages 58 safety camera sites across Cheshire, including Halton and Warrington.

Lee Murphy, project manager for Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership, says speed cameras are still proving to be the most effective deterrent against unruly drivers.

Data compiled in a national pilot scheme has also demonstrated a 35% accident reduction rate in Cheshire as a direct result of speed cameras.

Mr Murphy also claims the county is hitting all its national targets, and hopes to reduce the number of road accidents by 40% in 2010.

He said: 'All of these new camera locations have a history of collisions and casualties, which the partnership aims to address through education and enforcement activity.

'Cameras are highly visible and signed in advance.

'Not only should this ensure compliance with the speed limit, but it should alert road users to the fact they are near to a collision 'hot spot.'

'Hopefully the cameras will encourage motorists to think carefully about their driving behaviour and help to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on these roads.'

He added: 'The evidence shows speed cameras work and it is wrong to accuse the police of benefiting from revenue, as all we can do is claim back the cost of running the cameras.

'The revenue is needed for the cost of running the scheme.'
