A SPANISH university student studying in South Cheshire fears England could be on the receiving end of terror strikes similar to the attack which massacred 200 people in her home country.

Agata Alcaniz, 29, who is studying at Alsager's MMU Cheshire university campus, has spoken of her grief and sadness at the events which also saw more than 1,500 people injured by multiple bomb attacks on trains in Madrid.

Miss Alcaniz, who is studying contemporary arts at the university's Hassall Road site, said: 'It is scary and nowhere is safe now, including England and my home town of Barcelona.

'I am sad and angry, and feel that Al Qaeda are behind the attacks to avenge the invasion of Iraq.'

Miss Alcaniz, who was relieved that none of her friends or family was in Madrid at the time of the attacks on four trains on Thursday, added: 'Everybody knows violence is not a solution, but terrorism is a reality. You cannot just sit at home in fear, you must follow your life.'

Miss Alcaniz, who is in the third year of her degree, was delighted that socialist leader José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero swept to power in Spain's national election on Sunday.

She added: 'George W Bush, Tony Blair and Aznar have destroyed the work of activists and political groups who are trying so hard to restore peace.'
