A NORTHWICH man will be sentenced tomorrow (Thursday) after admitting a charge of assault.

Gareth Price, of Laburnum Road, admitted assaulting his mother in May.

Prosecuting, Karen Morgan-Read, said Price, 22, had been drinking heavily before he went into his mother's house and asked her for £10.

She said: 'She told him she didn't have it, which aggravated him.

'He pleaded with her to go out and either take the money out of the bank or borrow it from someone.

'They argued, and he shoved her into the kitchen work top.

'He then picked up a vegetable knife and told his mother that he would wait until his brother came home, then stab him.

'His mother was very distressed, as he has done so before. She ran out of the house, crying for help, but he caught up with her and dragged her back inside where he pinned her to the floor until police arrived.'

Defending, Derek McDonald called for a pre-sentence report to evaluate the family situation.

Chairman of the bench Clive Waring said: 'Common assault is a serious matter. And the case is made more serious by the fact this was an attack on your mother, which was prolonged and committed under the influence of alcohol.

'The threats to injure your brother are also a concern.

'This is certainly serious enough for us to consider custody.'
