A SHOPPING centre holds the first of many No Smoking awareness events tomorrow.

The Port Arcades in Ellesmere Port has already decided that smoking will no longer be allowed anywhere inside the building from January 1, 2007.

So, between now and the New Year, it will be promoting an awareness of the changes through activities, events and publications.

Staff will be joined by borough council officers handing out advice and information for those shoppers who want to stub out their habit.

Centre manager, Les Lyon said: 'There can never be enough good advice made available on the question of awareness of health problems linked to smoking and we are delighted to be working with the council providing this service to our shoppers.'

Elizabeth Reeves, borough environmental protection officer, said: 'We are looking forward to working with the Port Arcades Shopping centre on their no smoking awareness day to raise the health issues surrounding smoking.

'We'll be on hand with free advice and guidance on how to give up for good. Let's kick the habit and make 2007 a smoke-free year.'

The smoking restriction will apply to all enclosed parts of the shopping centre.

It comes six months ahead of Government legislation which will prohibit smoking in all buildings to which the public have access to from summer 2007.
