RESIDENTS are calling for motorists to take care following another smash on a notorious stretch of road.

A driver from Weaverham had to be rescued by firefighters when the car he was driving hit a lamp-post and tipped over on to its side on the A556 at Davenham on Wednesday.

Fire crews helped the 22-year-old out of the car and also administered first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to hospital.

It is the latest in a long line of accidents on the eastbound carriageway of the A556, just after the bend at the top of the slope near the Blue Bridge - and residents want action.

Mike Davies, who lives with his wife Pat on Royal Gardens, said: 'We must have had at least a dozen crashes on that bend in the last three years, and it's not just in bad weather.

'Cars are travelling too quickly as they are coming up from the bridge. There's a left bend at the top and it starts off slowly, but suddenly the bend increases. At the same time, the car goes lighter because of the hump at the top of the hill before it drops down.

'People end up going into a spin, but instead of going into the central reservation crash barriers, on almost every occasion they go towards the near side and hit the lampposts.

'The danger is that not only are more motorists going to die, but a pedestrian is going to be hit.'

He added: 'There are no warning signs, no accident blackspot notices, and it's 70mph - some cars go round that bend at 90mph. It's got worse since the traffic lights were installed on the other side of the bridge, because cars line up next to each other and race up the hill.

'We think the whole approach road should be slowed to 50mph. We have spoken to the highways department but they just say they are going to put chevrons on the barrier.'

Wednesday morning's crash came just a month after an inquest heard how car fanatic Richard Birtwisle, of Lymcote Drive, Hartford, died on New Year's Eve when his Caterham hit a lamppost at the same spot.

The inquest heard the 67-year-old was travelling round the bend at the top of the slope at between 70 and 80mph when a Winnington eyewitness saw the back end of the kit car snap out, both wheels hit the kerb, mount it and went into the lamppost.
