A MAN who just can't get enough of water slides is after another record tomorrow night.

Matthew Davenport, who holds the record for the farthest an individual has slid in 24 hours, is returning to the scene of his triumph at the Moss Farm Leisure Complex at Winnington in Northwich, to have a crack at the four-hour record.

But don't think he is taking the easy option because he still has a sore bottom from last time - his next challenge will be even harder, as he needs to go much faster.

Matthew, from Northwich, found his way into the record books in 2002 when he slid 138,515ft in 24 hours, raising £1,000 for Mencap.

He said: 'This time I am aiming at 50,000ft in four hours, and that means I will have to go down the slide on average twice a minute.

'Sliding down itself won't be a problem, it will be getting out the water and going up the steps over and over again that will be tiring.

'I started training straight after Christmas and it has gone well and I have now began my relaxing/recovering week prior to the attempt. I have been doing loads of long distance running and gym work, as well squash and hill running, but I won't do anything this week so as to maximise energy for the big day.

'It will be quite a challenge to go down the slide once every 30 seconds, but I am intending to have a 10-minute breather in the middle.'

The record is currently held by American Danielle Hassler, who covered 36,800ft inside four hours.

So why does he do it? Matt was at the Sun City resort in South Africa when he struck on the idea of sliding for extreme periods of time.

'I have always liked water slides and it came to me that you could do it for 24 hours. I contacted the Guinness Book of Records who said no-one had attempted it before, so I thought I'd give it a go.'

The former County High School, Leftwich, pupil is now a manager of the Majestic Wine Warehouse in Leeds.

Support Matthew by going down to Moss Farm Leisure Complex tomorrow (Thursday) from 7.30pm.
