Top endurance runners from Sir John Deane’s College have taken on some of the country’s leading young athletes in the English Schools Cross Country Championships.

Chloe Dooley, from Leftwich, and Sophie Smith, from Willaston , were among eight runners to be selected to represent Cheshire in the gruelling competition held at Wollaton Park, in Nottingham, on Saturday, March 5.

Teams from 45 counties were fielded in the all-day event – with Chloe and Sophie competing in the senior girls race, over 4.5 kilometres.

In their event, there were 307 finishers with both Chloe and Sophie finishing comfortably inside the top half of the field, and Sophie managing to break into the top 100.

The girls contributed well to Cheshire’s team position with Sophie being the second counter and Chloe the fourth within the squad – both improving on previous placings in the Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

Overall Cheshire managed to finish 15th team out of 37 complete teams.

The girls are now turning their attention to competing in the UK Intercounties for Cheshire next weekend in Birmingham.
