A series of road closures has been announced as Chester prepares for the arrival of thousands of 17th century soldiers for the UK’s biggest battle re-enactment of the year during a free three day event on August 29, 30 and 31.

On August Bank Holiday weekend, 2,000 Royalist and Parliamentary troops will re-enact the historic battle of Rowton Moor, which saw Charles I fail in his attempt to lift the siege of Chester .

The following roads will be closed on Saturday, August 29 from 10.30am for a maximum of two hours:

Northgate Street (from Princess Street to Eastgate Street), St Werburgh Street (full length), Eastgate Street (from Northgate Street to Foregate Street), Foregate Street (from Eastgate Street to St Johns Street), St John Street (full length).

The following roads will be closed on Saturday from 11.30am for a maximum of one hour:

Eaton Road (from Appleyards Lane to Overleigh Road), Overleigh Road (from Eaton Road to Handbridge), Handbridge (from Overleigh Road to Castle Drive), The Groves (from Handbridge to Souters Lane), Souters Lane (full length).

The following roads will be closed on Sunday and Monday (August 30-31) from 1pm for a maximum one and a half hours and then again at 3.30pm for a maximum of one and a half hours:

Eaton Road (from Appleyards Lane to Overleigh Road), Overleigh Road (from Eaton Road to Handbridge), Handbridge (full length), Castle Drive (From Little Roodee car park to Handbridge).
