A RURAL village starts celebrations and fundraising activities this weekend to secure the future of their 860-year-old parish church.

Residents of Shocklach and the surrounding area will be holding a series of activities to raise funds for the 12th century St Edith's-in-the-Village. It all starts this Saturday with the school fete and local art exhibition.

The celebrations are being backed by local publicans Jon and Lindsay Cox of the Bull. The pub will host several events and special brew Eight Sixty ale will be on the bar this weekend and again in September, with all proceeds going towards church funds.

Jon Cox said: “Sadly, without help, St Edith’s is in danger of closing within the next few years. This would mean no more weddings, christenings, Easter, or Christmas services. Together we may be able to keep it going, please don’t let St Edith’s become another lost treasure.”

It costs around £1000 a month to keep the church open, including a compulsory fee paid each month to the Diocese of Chester plus insurance, electricity and general maintenance

Donations are requested, via standing orders or fundraising events. Services are held every Sunday morning at 11.15am.
