Bickerton woke to the bang of a safely detonated Second World War mortar bomb on Tuesday (March 15).
An unexploded device was found in the village and had been by police guarded overnight before being disposed shortly after 7am.
Explosive experts were called out and they decided destroying the bomb where it lay was the safest option.
The detonation was safely controlled by Cheshire Police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
Those in the surrounding area were warned they would hear the explosion.
A spokesman said it proved to be a ‘smoke mortar’, almost the same size as a walkie-talkie handset, and posed a ‘limited danger’.
