VOLUNTEERS are sought to serve on Malpas recreation ground committee to run the facility and help raise funds for its ongoing development and maintenance.

The old committee resigned en masse in April in protest at what then secretary Charles Higgie described as 'constant criticism'.

Cllr Ann Wright, chairwoman of Malpas Parish Council, released a statement, saying: 'The recent disputes that have developed within the recreation ground committee have had at their core finance.

'Rather than dwell on what has been and what has happened the parish council must work with those committee members who are willing to continue and new members to establish a committee which has a firm financial footing and the support of the community.'

The old committee has stayed in place in a caretaker capacity until the new committee is formed. Former chairman David Storer, 75, does not wish to have a lead-ership role in future, but has agreed to continue with the crucial work of applying for grants for the committee.

He was at the Malpas parish meeting on Monday (June 12) where councillors agreed to a £2,000 grant and may give more if finances allow.

Volunteers willing to serve on the committee can contact Malpas parish and city Cllr Keith Ebben on 01948 820656, or e-mail malpas.rec@googlemail.com or leave a note in the Malpas Parish Council box in Owens' newsagents.
