HARTHILL Primary could effectively close after the February half term break.

County councillors are to be told on Thursday that following last September’s decision to close the school, pupil numbers fell sharply this month as parents and carers made arrangements to transfer their children to alternative schools.

A report says at present only nine pupils attend the school and they are due to leave after the half term holiday.

The school governors say they believe it would be in the best interests of the children to move at the earliest opportunity.

The school would officially close at the end of April.

The governors have also asked the county council to ensure remaining members of staff are found suitable alternative employment by that date.

Councillors are being recommended to agree the move “to enable the closure of the school to take place in an orderly way, in line with the intentions of the parents and carers of the remaining pupils and with the wishes of the governing body”.
