SUMMER holidays kicked off in style at the Oakley Centre in Crewe which is hosting a play-scheme.

More than 100 children are enjoying sports and craft activities organised by Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council play supervisors.

The centre, part of the Victoria complex on West Street, is Ofsted registered for up to 150 children a day.

Playscheme supervisor Gill Tarrant said: 'Parents can leave their children with the peace of mind that they are in safe hands and enjoying a full programme of activities.'

Play opportunities are being based on the themes of carnivals and festivals and the world around us.

Boredom-beating activities include making tents, dressing up as story characters, building rockets and learning circus skills.

They are running alongside football, tennis, rounders, singing and drama.

A bouncy castle is also on offer as well as face-painting.

This summer organisers have teamed up with the Wishing Well Project to help families from its catch-ment area cover costs of fees.

The project is working to ease social-deprivation in the West End of Crewe.

Play fees are £8 for a full day from 9.30am to 4pm with a break for lunch at 12.30pm.

The scheme is open to five to 11 year-olds. they can bring their own packed lunch or one will be provided for a small charge.
