A SAUGHALL mum has made history.

Kathy Ford has become the first parish councillor to be elected under the new Cheshire West and Chester Council.

In a by election held in Saughall and Shotwick Park, called following the resignation of Cllr Phil Williams, Kathy streaked to a landslide victory with 156 of the 304 votes cast.

Postal votes accounted for 160 of the total.

Of the other two candidates, Harry Dobson polled 64 and Andrew Errington 82.

The turnout was a very low 12.7%.

The parish council decided not to issue poll cards after hearing the cost of the election could be in the region of £1,500.

Councillors saved £600 by doing without.

Election staff from the new council had a Iong day as the polls in the Vernon Institute were open from 7am to 10pm followed by the count.

An onlooker said:"They were in very good humour and were smiling right to the very end."

Kathy, two of whose youngsters are looking forward to going to the new Thomas Wedge primary school, says she decided to try to get involved with the parish council as so much is happening in the village.

Ten electors called for a poll.
