ANGRY residents in a Chester village are enduring a lorry load of trouble at their village store.

Huge articulated lorries deliver to the Co-op, which is next to Saughall All Saints Primary School in Church Road, several times a day.

The HGVs are too big for the store’s car park and have to turn around in the narrow main road.

Wes Graham, who lives directly opposite the store, said: “This is an accident waiting to happen.

“The first deliveries arrive when there are families passing on their way to school and I’ve seen youngsters having to run away from the rear of reversing lorries.

“The drivers mount the footpath and sometimes even use my driveway to reverse into the store.

“I’ve lost count of how many times the lorries have hit my fence in the last year.

“I’ve reported it to the manager, who has been very sympathetic, but I’ve not heard anything back from the company itself.

“These lorries are huge and suited to a superstore car park, not a small community shop.”

Simon Carswell, who also lives opposite the store, added: “Kids are always running across the Co-op car park so I’m certain it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets knocked down.”

A Co-operative Group spokesperson said: “We apologise for any damage caused to a neighbour’s fence and for any inconvenience.

“We have instructed our Health and Safety team to investigate and we will act on their recommendations to try to prevent further incidents.

“We are aware of the concerns relating to deliveries at our Church Road store in Saughall.

“As a local community retailer we take any disruption caused by our delivery drivers seriously, and we will work with local residents to address these issues.”
