A residential road in Chester has been shut 'until further notice' because it is unsafe.

Sandy Lane in Great Boughton , the B5130, was closed for safety reasons just after 1pm on Thursday (March 31) while an inspection takes place.

Cheshire Police initially said the issue was a 'sinkhole' and temporary traffic lights were brought in on the street overnight on Wednesday.

Cheshire West and Chester Council confirmed the closure was actually 'due to an unsafe excavation by a developer' next to the road.

A CWaC spokeswoman said: "The highways team is closing Sandy Lane approximately 100 metres North of Walmoor Park for safety reasons until further notice.

"A diversion will be put in place from Gorse Way, Caldy Valley Road to Christleton Road whilst the extent of the damage can be assessed.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
