CORONATION Street star Samia Ghadie took the wheel of a racing car to give a South Cheshire charity a celebrity boost.

Samia, who plays Weatherfield hairdresser Maria Sutherland, unveiled the car at Oulton Park racetrack at a fun day organised by the Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The car is the latest weapon in the charity's fight to raise aware-ness of prostate cancer among men. It has sponsored a race-tuned MG which will be competing at meetings across the country.

The vehicle carries the message 'Don't Lose The Most Important Race Of Your Life' to encourage men to think more about their health.

Gary Steele, the charity group's organiser, said it was the first time in the UK that a charity had sponsored a racing car to promote a health message.

'Motor racing is predominantly a male preserve so we thought we'd take the message to them. Prostate cancer is a man's disease and can be treated if detected in its early stages.

'Unfortunately, half the men who get prostate cancer are still dying because they were too embarrassed to have a medical checkup.

'We asked Samia to help us spread the word because it also illustrates the fact that women are the real driving force in our charity.'

Samia said she was delighted to help. She added: 'I didn't realise that prostate cancer affected as many men as it does.

'If men were more aware and prepared to be checked out by their doctors we can save thousands more lives.'

Oulton Park has nominated Leighton Hospital's Prostate Cancer Support Group as its chosen charity.

Meanwhile, the Support Group has recently joined forces with a team of eminent British scientists who have produced a tablet called Lyco Plus, designed to help in the fight against prostate cancer.

The pill contains lycopene, a natural substance found in tomatoes which is believed to have both preventative and beneficial effects on cancer cells.

Latest statistics show prostate cancer is now the biggest killer of men in the UK.
