YOUNG volunteers have been helping out at Saltney Youth and Community Centre during a summer playscheme.

Helpers aged 14-17 have been overseeing a range of activities including arts and crafts and football games in the playscheme, funded by Saltney Town Council and supported by Flintshire Youth and Community Service.

Nearly 100 children have been attending the three-week scheme, with 27 volunteers ensuring the activities are well co-ordinated.

Many of the volunteering youths, the majority of who attend St David’s High School, have helped the scheme for between five and seven years.

For some of them this may be their last year of volunteering, as they go on to college, university, or work.

Julie Thomas, full-time community youth worker at the centre, said: “Without these fantastic young people volunteering, the playscheme would never take place. They are a credit to the community of Saltney and deserve very special praise.

“These young people have made us feel so proud; they have shown a true and positive community spirit. They are very special young people.”
