MEASURES to improve security around a Saltney residential area are beginning to take shape.

A section of two-metre fencing is being built between Larch Way and Park Avenue, at a cost of about £6,600.

The aim of the new fencing is to deter youths heading on to the cul-de-sac from the Rec park area, potentially causing anti-social behaviour.

The move follows a spate of incidents in the area during the World Cup in June, when vandals smashed car windows and intimidated elderly residents.

Saltney Town Mayor Veronica Gay said: “This is a project which has been in the pipeline for some time.

“The Rec is the only place where people congregate but it can be hard to manage with its four exits if any trouble happens.

“This is the first phase of improving security for residents. The next is to see if we can have a dawn to dusk patrol run by volunteers, which has to be properly signed up and agreed.

“We are seeing where the issues are and we target them and make people feel more secure.

“Moving forward, we are hoping to do another pathway which will be lit and would keep the youngsters active in the middle of the park.”
