Children at Saighton CE Primary School have spent a week studying global awareness, with a particular focus on Africa.

This resulted in a raised awareness in the children of the lack of somewhere safe, private or hygienic to go to the toilet in many parts of the world.

The children learned how this can lead to illness and disease and was in stark contrast to life in their own homes.

For £60 the children realised that they could make a difference to the lives of children in Africa by purchasing a toilet through the Toilet Twinning Scheme. A cake sale was arranged for the end of the week to raise the necessary funds.

The school was also grateful to Plumbase in Chester for supplying the school with a real toilet, which headteacher Mavis Sellers was happy to pose alongside.

The school will receive a plaque showing their twinned toilet in Africa. For more information go to www.toilettwinning.org
